It was 1984
that seven leading specialist companies in the application of sealants
realised that there was a need for an organised body within the industry
and, supported by the major sealant manufacturers, formed the Association
of Sealant Applicators Limited (ASA).
The ASA's aim was to be a
simple but important one - to promote the high standards of workmanship
and design demanded by today's high tech industries and provide an organised
forum for advanced training and the circulation of ideals and techniques.
In fact, training has a very
important aspect of the ASA's role and it's taken very seriously both
by the Association and its members. The ASA produced its own comprehensive
training video, which is available to their member companies to ensure
that their personnel are in touch with the latest techniques. This is
in addition to being at Assessment centre for the provision of NVQ training.
The ASA also keeps its members
up to date with the latest industry trends by maintaining a close liaison
with manufacturers, architects, specifiers and construction companies,
by attending trade exhibitions and by working jointly with other professional
bodies - including the SWI of the USA, the BSI and BQF.
The ASA has grown in strength
over the years and today represents the very highest standards in the
sealant industry and can count among its members the finest companies
in the business.
The ASA's message to the
industry is a simple one. If you want to be really sure of an excellent
job, always specify a member of the ASA.
The Association is controlled
by a chairman and other officers annually elected by the members, who
direct the day to day running of the secretariat.
NVQ LEVEL 2 FOR SEALANT
APPLICATORS
Whilst the Association already
had in place a training scheme for applicators the Association was approached
by CITB in 1998 to assist in the development of NVQ Level 2 in Sealant
Application. This qualification is today in place and went live on the
1st January 2001 under the designation Construction and Civil Engineering
Services Level 1 & Level 2 - Joint Sealant Application (QAD 501).
Work is currently being undertaken upon the development of a Modern
Apprenticeship for sealant applicators as well as a Level 3 qualification
for the industry.
The Associations offices
also act as the centre management for the qualification and provides
the appropriate training materials and allocation of assessors as appropriate.
The introduction of Construction
Skills Certification Scheme for sealant applicators (CSCS Cards) is
now leading to an increased up take in training towards the NVQ qualification
for both new trainees and experienced applicators.
NATIONAL SPECIALIST CONTRACTORS COUNCIL (NSCC)
The Association is in itself
a member of the NSCC, which acts as an umbrella organisation for the
smaller specialist trades to help ensure that their word is heard within
the construction industry as a whole. Association members receive benefits
from the NSCC, and in particular the use of their legal help line for
both employment affairs, contractual and legal matters when required.
Additionally members receive help and support with regard to arbitration
issues and in particular the appointment of an appropriate arbitrator,
via our membership of The Association of Independent Construction Adjudicators.(AICA
AND FINALLY
An Association member benefits
from the availability of comprehensive training materials in order to
obtain NVQ Qualification together with both training and marketing videos.
In addition, health and safety booklets and literature are available.
Membership of the Association also gives the ability to help influence
the way the forward for our industry and this has been particularly
useful when considering the development of the NVQ Qualification. Our
links with NSCC give further strength and provides a further valuable
support mechanism for our members.
